U.S. OLYMPIC FESTIVAL LOS ANGELES 1991 : NOTEBOOK

Scientific ingenuity: Steve Kelley, a three-time former Olympian in kayaking, is notable for his originality in announcing the play-by-play at the canoe/kayak competition.

On the back of a tandem bicycle and talking into a walkie-talkie, Kelley rode alongside each race from the starting line until the race was clearly visible to the main moderator positioned in the tent at the finish line. In order for the crowd lining the creek to hear Kelley’s play-by-play, the moderator in the main booth placed her walkie-talkie against the main microphone. About 250 meters from the finish line, the moderator in the main booth would pick up the action, and Kelley would return to the starting line, to await the next race.
