TUSTIN : Dye From Cash Bag Nets Two Suspects

Share

Two men suspected of robbing a Tustin bank were arrested Monday as police searching a van in Santa Ana found the pair--allegedly covered with dye that sprayed from an exploding money packet.

Police Lt. Houston Williams said a man walked into the Wells Fargo Bank at 14601 Red Hill Ave., put a canvas bag on the counter and demanded money. The man stuck his hand in a pocket as if he had a gun.

After getting the cash, the man ran out to a waiting van, but a witness wrote down its license number.

Detectives traced the van about an hour later to 604 S. Harbor Blvd. in the industrial section of Santa Ana, Williams said.

Inside the van were two men, covered with dye contained in the money package that exploded after the suspect left the bank. About $345 taken in the robbery was not recovered, and detectives found no gun, Williams said.

In custody are Joseph Paul Gregory, 33, and Gregg Robert Malagon, 43.
