SOUTH COUNTY : Firefighters Control 8-Acre Brush Fire

A brush fire, apparently caused by a tractor with no spark arrester, charred eight acres of unincorporated land Monday, fire authorities said.

Workers from the Roger Green Ranch on Verdugo Canyon Road near Ortega Highway apparently were plowing land when the fire was sparked at 3:35 p.m., County Fire Capt. Dan Young said.

“Anyone using a tractor has to use one with a spark arrester, and this one did not have one,” Young said.

Young credited the 75 firefighters, who manned 14 pieces of brush fire equipment, two helicopters and an airplane, with controlling the blaze within two hours.

“With the weather the way it has been and the dead brush so dry, throughout the rest of the summer we’ll be sending a great deal of equipment to the scene to ensure that fires are effectively fought,” Young said.

Fire officials have ruled that the blaze was accidental, and the tractor owner was not cited, Young said.
