The New York Metropolitan Opera will venture into the world of pay-per-view television with its Sept. 23 season opener, as the result of an agreement with NBC and Cablevision.

Met spokesman Charles Sheek and Richard Cutting, manager of corporate communications for NBC, confirmed Tuesday that an agreement had been reached but said they could not provide details.

The price that home viewers will be charged was not announced. A trade publication, the Hollywood Reporter, quoted insiders who said they expect the price to be around $34.95.

The Sept. 23 event, commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Met’s Lincoln Center residency, is slated to include tenors Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti.

The broadcast would mark the first time that the arts have joined rock concerts and sports such as boxing on pay-per-view television.
