Arafat Unhurt When Car Overturns in Iraq
PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat escaped injury when his car overturned while speeding across Iraq at more than 100 m.p.h., a Palestine Liberation Organization official said Tuesday.
A bodyguard threw himself on the 61-year-old Arafat as the black Mercedes-Benz rolled over, and both the guard’s arms were broken, the source said.
The accident reportedly occurred Sunday, 90 miles from the Jordanian border, when the car swerved to avoid a traffic diversion for repair work as Arafat was being driven from Baghdad to Amman, Jordan.
