Cow alert: Jay Barrs, who won an Olympic gold medal for archery in 1988, on why he thinks archery is a good Olympic sport: “It’s inexpensive. You don’t have to build a Velodrome or stadium. All you need is a flat cow pasture.”

Archery Interaction: For the past three years, Barrs has been dating Janet Schaffer, who is shooting for the West team at the Festival. Another Festival couple is Debra Ochs, a member of the 1988 Olympic team that won a bronze medal, who became engaged in May to Joe Asay, the World Indoor bow champion. Ochs and Asay met at the World Indoor trials in January. They plan to marry the third weekend in March in 1992.

Schaffer, 21, who started shooting archery about four years ago, said she would have pursued the sport even if she wouldn’t have met and eventually started dating Barrs.
