BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Rader’s Right Move Turns Out Wrong

Share

As promised after Friday’s 4-2 loss, Manager Doug Rader juggled his lineup Saturday. He went exclusively with right-handed hitters against left-hander Denis Boucher, giving Wally Joyner, Dave Parker and Luis Polonia the day off.

With Joyner out of the starting lineup for the first time since June 16, Bobby Rose played first. Luis Sojo started in left field in place of Polonia, who is in a four-for-36 slump.

“I’ll take a day off, the way I’m going. They had me in the lineup against two lefties and I couldn’t get a hit. Why not give somebody else a chance to do something?” said Polonia, whose .285 average is his lowest since April 12. “At this point, I don’t even want to come to the ballpark sometimes. My mind is screwed up. I’ll take a day off today, have a good day tomorrow and then we go on the road. I hit well on the road.”

Sojo’s start in left was his first as an Angel. He hit second in the batting order, with Gary Gaetti third and Dave Winfield hitting cleanup.

Bill Bavasi, the Angels’ director of minor league operations, said top draft pick Eduardo Perez has been idled by a bruised finger for the past week but is generally progressing well with Class-A Boise. Bavasi also said Joe Grahe is pitching well for triple-A Edmonton, but Scott Lewis is struggling.

“I saw him (Lewis) do well there last year, so I’d have to say (confidence) is the problem,” Bavasi said. “But I have confidence he’ll end up pitching well.”

The Angels entered Saturday’s game with only two home runs in their past 108 innings. . . . Members of the Angels’ front office defeated a squad of reporters, 10-1, Saturday morning at Anaheim Stadium. Angel President Richard Brown led the winners by going three for four.
