Two sewage spills over the weekend soiled the plans of some of those looking to enjoy the water off Ocean Beach and La Jolla.
A 5,000-gallon spill in Ocean Beach occurred at 5 a.m. Saturday and closed Dog Beach from the mouth of the San Diego River to lifeguard tower No. 5. Seven signs, 75 feet apart, were posted that warned swimmers to avoid the area. The area was closed through Sunday.
Grease and roots in a sewer line caused 4,500 gallons of raw sewage to spill into the ocean Sunday afternoon at the Ecological Reserve south of La Jolla Shores. The reserve is popular among scuba divers because of its rich aquatic life. It will be closed to the north end of Kellogg Park until at least 2:30 p.m. today.
Mike Vernetti of the San Diego County Health Services Department said a laboratory team will take ocean samples today to determine whether to lift the postings or continue them for another 24 hours.
