FOUNTAIN VALLEY : Sudden Stop Stalls Freeway for Hours
A tractor-trailer loaded with 8,000-pound rolls of carpet overturned on the northbound San Diego Freeway on Tuesday, bringing traffic to a crawl for about 4 to 5 miles, the California Highway Patrol said.
At 11:10 a.m., the truck’s driver, Virgil Brown, 40, of Brea, was driving at about 50 m.p.h. when the car in front of him made a sudden stop near the Euclid Street exit, said CHP Officer Lyle Whitten.
The driver of the car “came to a stop due to bundle of cotton on the roadway,” Whitten said. “The driver of the big-rig swerved . . . to avoid the car . . . and lost control of the truck and overturned.”
The truck blocked the car-pool lane and two other lanes, leaving only two lanes open, Whitten said. The three lanes were closed for two hours until the truck was heaved back onto its wheels, he said. There were no reported injuries and no one was cited.
