Fund-Raiser Lifts Spirits for Cancer Society

American Cancer Society’s “California Spirit VII” July 14 at the Robert Taylor estate raised $90,000 for ongoing research, preventive education and services for cancer patients and their families. Beverly Petal was event chair.

Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Center of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center was the center of attention June 18 when the Women’s Guild board invited members and their guests to tour the new facility made possible by the guild’s gift of $250,000. The facility is the first of its kind in Los Angeles and one of only 30 in North America. It is equipped with special modules--a gas pump, restaurant, bank, fast-food counter, supermarket and bus stop--simulating everyday environments to assist disabled patients in perfecting necessary daily skills. About 400 patients a month are expected to make use of the facility. Marcia Ziffren is guild president. The guild has provided financial support to Cedars since 1957, aiding more than 60 projects and raising more than $9 million.

* Jeffrey Foundation’s 10th annual fashion show and luncheon held June 26 at Jimmy’s Restaurant, Beverly Hills, raised $10,000 for specialized child care for disabled children. Event chair Blanche Greer has presided over the annual event for the last decade, raising more than $150,000.

* U. S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, under construction in Washington, D.C., received almost $600,000 raised at a dinner held at Congregation Beth Israel in Los Angeles. The event for 200 was hosted by Max Webb. The museum is scheduled to open in April, 1993.

* Los Angeles Regional Foodbank received a $15,000 contribution from GTE California in Thousand Oaks for the food bank’s children and youth program. The funds will aid 73 nonprofit agencies throughout Los Angeles County, including missions, day-care centers and residential facilities.

* Marianne Frostig Center for Educational Therapy raised $45,000 at its annual family fund-raiser at Disney Studios in Burbank. The June 30 event included a screening of “101 Dalmatians,” food, games and rides. Proceeds will help to serve the needs of learning-disabled children. Judy Kloner and Carol Scott were co-chairs.

* Futures for Children received $5,000, a portion of the proceeds from the two-day “Shake Hands With Sante Fe” art sale and reception April 10-11 in Los Angeles. The funds will provide aid to Southwestern Indian children and their families.

* The Neighborhood Youth Assn. held its fourth annual NYA/Celebrity Softball Game June 16 at Pepperdine University, Malibu. Proceeds of $38,000 will be used for comprehensive program services for at-risk and high-risk children, adolescents and their families. The agency serves the Westside and Harbor area of Los Angeles County. The event, sponsored by Toyota, was chaired by John Ebey.
