Researched by: APRIL JACKSON / Los Angeles Times

The city of Brea has a little more than three sworn police officers per thousand residents; Anaheim about one-half officer per thousand. The rest of the county’s municipalities range somewhere between the two. No city but Anaheim, though, has a ratio of less than one officer per thousand. Here’s how they compare:

Sworn Police Officers per City Population Officers 1,000 Residents Anaheim 266,406 146 .55 Brea 32,873 101 3.07 Buena Park 68,784 91 1.32 Costa Mesa 96,357 140 1.45 Cypress 42,655 53 1.24 Fountain Valley 53,691 62 1.15 Fullerton 114,144 154 1.35 Garden Grove 143,050 165 1.15 Huntington Beach 181,519 220 1.21 Irvine 110,330 127 1.15 Laguna Beach 23,170 40 1.73 La Habra 51,266 63 1.23 La Palma 15,392 24 1.56 Los Alamitos 11,676 25 2.14 Newport Beach 66,643 150 2.25 Orange 110,658 155 1.40 Placentia 41,259 56 1.36 San Clemente 41,100 49 1.19 Santa Ana 293,742 420 1.43 Seal Beach 25,098 41 1.63 Tustin 50,689 78 1.54 Westminster 78,118 99 1.27

A Clipboard chart in Saturday’s edition should have shown Anaheim with 344 police officers, giving the city a ratio of 1.29 officers per thousand residents, and Laguna Beach with 49 officers, and a 2.11 ratio per thousand residents. The chart should also have noted that Brea’s department is also responsible for policing parts of Yorba Linda.

Note: Police services for the cities of Dana Point, Laguna Niguel, Mission Viejo, San Juan Capistrano, Stanton, Villa Park and Yorba Linda are contracted to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
