2 Take Skills Abroad as Peace Corps Volunteers

Elizabeth Nichols, 26, of Newport Beach will work in public health in Zaire and Margarita Lima, 48, of Santa Ana will teach English at the university level in Czechoslovakia as members of the Peace Corps.

“By working as a Peace Corps volunteer, I expect to learn about myself and the world,” said Nichols, who is a graduate of UC Irvine and El Dorado High School in Placentia. Nichols is scheduled to leave for Africa Aug. 4.

Lima is a graduate of UC Riverside and went to high school in Puerto Rico. “The goals of the Peace Corps attracted me to join,” Lima said. “This is a great time to grow in many aspects.” She left for Czechoslovakia in July.

Wilbur W. Wright, 58, of Laguna Niguel has returned after having served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Botswana since March, 1988. Wright was a chief executive officer of a trust responsible for the development and expansion of a production zone.

“Peace Corps was a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” Wright said.

Tustin High School senior Marc Coopersmith is attending a one-week Summer Camp/Institute for Prospective Teachers at Indiana University in Bloomington. The camp began Thursday and will run through Tuesday.

The camp is sponsored by Phi Delta Kappa, the international fraternity for educators, and the Phi Delta Kappa Educational Foundation. About 200 high school students from 38 states and Canada, Puerto Rico, Germany and South Korea are attending.

Mandolin player Phong Do, an Orange Coast College student, won first place in the recent Orange County Musicians Assn. Local No. 7 music competition.

Do, a Westminster resident, was awarded $200. This is the second consecutive year that an Orange Coast College music student has won the competition.

Do, 25, is a native of Vietnam, and has been playing the mandolin for 15 years. Do is studying music and mathematics and plans to transfer to UC Irvine to major in computer science.

Boy Scouts Chris Carter, Craig Kobayashi, Dan Weddell and Steve Weddell, all of Troop 99 in Yorba Linda, have been selected to participate in the Boy Scouts XVII World Jamboree in South Korea Aug. 8 through 16.

The theme this year is “Many Lands, One World.” The Scouts will participate in various competitions with youths from 100 other countries.

Dan Weddell is a freshman at UC San Diego. The others are students at Troy High School in Fullerton.

Orange resident M. Russell Bakke has been reelected to a two-year term as a regional vice chairman and a director of the Far West region of American Mensa, the high-IQ society. As the regional vice president, Bakke oversees the activities of 16 chapters with a total of more than 6,100 members. The Orange County chapter has 993 members.

Susan Lara, a June graduate of Santa Ana High School, and Christopher Darden, a June graduate of Anaheim High School, have been awarded $4,000 Career Awareness Program scholarships by Home Savings of America.

Lara was senior class president and co-captain of the varsity volleyball team. She will attend UC Irvine, where she plans to major in engineering.

Darden was president of his high school Honor Society. He will attend either UC Irvine or Stanford University.
