A man holding an unloaded handgun was shot and killed by a Hawthorne police officer Sunday, authorities said. The officer was uninjured in the shooting, which occurred outside a duplex in the 11300 block of Grevillea Avenue about 1 p.m., Sheriff’s Sgt. Ron Spear said.

Officers were called to the address to investigate a report of a man with a gun who had been firing shots, Spear said. “One of the officers approached the man, who was standing in the front yard of the duplex with his back to the officer,” Spear said.

The officer ordered the man to halt, but the suspect turned toward the officer, who saw that the man had a gun, Spear said.

“The suspect did not drop the gun, and at that time, the officer, in fear of his life, fired four rounds from his duty weapon, striking the suspect in the upper torso,” he said. The 45-year-old Inglewood man died at Robert F. Kennedy Medical Center.
