Slaying Tips Sought as Girl’s Photo Replaces Phantom Image

Vista has been replaced by a photograph.

An empty billboard that drew tens of thousands of onlookers to what they said was the likeness of a slain San Ysidro girl now displays her photo and a phone number people can call to report any information about her killing.

On Friday, billboard company officials dedicated the new image on Beyer Boulevard to Laura Arroyo, who was snatched from her home and killed June 19.

From 50 to 100 people came, according to Frank Sanchez, general manager of the billboard company. “I’m very relieved that we did this,” Sanchez said. “I think this closes a chapter. . . . It doesn’t mean it’s the end. We’ll just leave it alone and see if the board can do a job on delivering a new tip,” he said.

Since mid-July, thousands of people gathered to view the board when some onlookers claimed the play of light and shadow on the blank billboard created the outline of Laura.
