From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Two cars of a Union Pacific freight train carrying lumber, raisins and tomato paste derailed Friday alongside the Feather River outside Virgilia in Plumas County.

The articulated flatbed cars, part of a 20-car train double-stacked with containers, went off the tracks at about 12:30 p.m. Sheriff’s Sgt. Len Gardner said there were no injuries and only a few pieces of lumber went into the water when one car landed in the river, about 100 miles northeast of Sacramento.

The rear segment of the eastbound train careened off the tracks while climbing uphill at the Virgilia grade, Union Pacific spokesman John Bromley said. The train, headed from Oakland to Chicago, was traveling at about 12 m.p.h. when the cars derailed, he said.

The cause is under investigation. The train was not on a main track and rail traffic will not be interrupted, Bromley said.
