There’ve been fiddlers and banjo players this summer at Veterans Park in Redondo Beach. Jazz and Caribbean calypso have been heard, along with the classics, be-bop and nostalgic hits of the 1930s, ‘40s and ‘50s.

On Wednesday, it’ll be time for the twang of country tunes, as singer Nikki Hornsby and her five-member band, the Rangers, will perform as part of the free, city-sponsored “Concert in the Park” series. The hourlong performance in the band shell starts at 6:30 p.m.

“We go for a variety because we try to meet the needs of everybody,” recreation supervisor Steve Bonnell said. He added that the biggest hit this year was a concert of ‘60s surfer music in the style of Jan and Dean and the Beach Boys. It drew 350 people. “The crowd was really into it that night,” he said.

The grassy park is terraced in front of the band shell, and concert-goers bring picnics and spread out on blankets and lawn chairs. “The background is the ocean, which makes the setting just perfect,” Bonnell said. “It’s a family outing with lots of children.”

Hornsby and her group will offer such contemporary favorites as “Wind Beneath My Wings” and “Unchained Melody,” as well as original songs that take a humorous look at love.

The series closes Aug. 21 with a blues night featuring the group Lucia, Levi and the Little Zipper Band.

Veterans Park is at 309 Esplanade, near the Redondo Pier.
