From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Authorities investigating a head-on crash that killed eight young people said it could be at least a week before they learn if either driver was under the influence of alcohol. Some victims had been seen drinking before the accident in rural Contra Costa County, and beer bottles and cans were strewn amid the wreckage, the California Highway Patrol said. However, most of the containers were unopened. All eight people, ages 15 to 21, in a pickup truck were killed. None of the passengers were wearing seat belts, and at least five were in the bed of the truck. Six were thrown from the truck. Two young men in a second truck survived. One suffered a broken leg and the other was treated and released from a hospital. Five of the victims lived in Oakley, about 40 miles east of San Francisco.
