PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Aikman Throwing Harder Than Ever

Share

In Dallas’ exhibition season opener last week, a 24-14 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, quarterback Troy Aikman completed seven of nine passes and showed no effects from off-season surgery to repair an injured right shoulder. Aikman also had a dozen bone chips removed from his right elbow and is reportedly throwing with more zip than ever.

Familiar faces: Former Raiders John Gesek and Dale Hellestrae play prominent roles for Dallas. Gesek starts at right guard, Hellestrae is the team’s long snapper. Former Ram receiver coach Norv Turner is Dallas’ new offensive coordinator. Former UCLA star Ken Norton is starting at middle linebacker but is being pushed by former USC Trojan Jack Del Rio. James Washington, the former Bruin and Ram who signed with Dallas as a Plan B free agent in 1990, starts at strong safety. . . . Dallas’ first-round pick, receiver Alvin Harper from Tennessee, is already pushing for a starting job. He had three receptions for 94 yards and two touchdowns in his debut last week. . . . The Cowboys had a league-high 17 draft choices in 1991. . . . Defensive tackle Tony Casillas, the former disgruntled Atlanta Falcon acquired in a recent trade, is starting ahead of Russell Maryland, the top pick in last April’s NFL draft.
