California Insurance Commissioner John Garamendi named Schuyler Johnson, former director of community relations for Los Angeles City Atty. James Hahn, as new chief of the consumer services division of the state Insurance Department.

In other appointments, Garamendi promoted department veteran Norris Clark to fill a newly created position of chief of financial surveillance. In his new position, Clark will manage the department’s financial analysis, financial examination and actuarial divisions. Another promotion went to Ramon Calderon, who becomes chief of the field examination division. Garamendi also hired his third press aide, Mary Sue Maurer, a former employee of the Disney Channel.
