Gordon Esterbrook, an 11-year veteran of the Santa Paula Planning Commission, has announced his resignation, officials said Monday.

Citing the poor health of his wife, Laura, Esterbrook said he will leave the seven-member panel immediately.

The vacant seat is expected to be filled in early September, and applications for the non-paid job are being accepted through the city clerk’s office, Mayor John Melton said. Applicants must be residents of Santa Paula.

Esterbrook, 77, was not up for reappointment until 1994. Before his appointment to the commission in 1980, Esterbrook worked as a civilian electrician in the Army Corps of Engineers.

Commissioners are appointed to four-year terms that expire in August. Scott Dunbar and Robert Borrego are ending their first terms this year.

The Planning Commission votes on zone changes and certain use permits and serves as an advisory panel to the City Council.
