NOTEBOOK : PADRES UPDATE : Larry Andersen Not Cheering About Tommy Lasorda’s Antics

Share

Padre reliever Larry Andersen, still aggravated about Dodger Manager Tom Lasorda’s antics the previous night, went sightseeing Tuesday afternoon at Universal Studios. He stepped into a few gift shops, looked around, but never could find the item he really wanted.

“I really wanted to buy pompons for Lasorda,” Andersen said. “That’s what I really wanted to do.”

Why didn’t he?

“They don’t sell any.”

Andersen was irritated at Lasorda on Monday night for standing in front of the dugout in the 10th inning of the Dodgers’ 3-2 victory and pumping his fists, trying to rile up the crowd.

“Tommy is a good manager, there’s no doubt about it,” Andersen said Monday night, “but I don’t think it’s necessary for a manager to put on his cheerleader’s skirt with pleats in it, a big blue ‘D’ on his sweater, get his pompons, and get the crowd going.

“Coming in here and watching Tommy do his little pompon cheerleading routine, I wanted to puke. That’s college bull . . . I hate losing to these . . . guys.”

Andersen said his comments Monday were out of frustration. Not only was he upset at his pitching performance, but he said his neck has been troubling him again. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list in May with a herniated disc in his neck, and after three months the pain has returned.

“It’s really starting to bother me again,” Andersen said. “I’ve been fine ever since coming off the disabled list, but the past three days it’s been giving me trouble. Hopefully, I’ll be able to get through this until the end of the season.”

Although Andersen has saved a career-high nine games and has yielded a stingy .237 batting average, he has been frustrated by his inconsistencies this season. He looks like the best setup man in baseball one night and a journeyman the next.

Buck Rodgers, according to sources, says he definitely will manage in the American League next season. He has been contacted by two teams, the Angels and either the Milwaukee Brewers or the Seattle Mariners. . . . The Padres, after further research, discovered that Jack Howell’s two-homer game Monday was actually the fifth of his career. . . . Dodger left fielder Kal Daniels celebrated his 28th birthday Tuesday. . . . The Padres will play the final game of their three-game series against the Dodgers at 1:35 p.m. today.
