Image That Evokes Lynching Should Go
At least six months ago while driving west on Manhattan Beach Boulevard, as I approached the Redondo Avenue intersection, I was utterly taken aback. Hanging from a light post on the central island was the silhouette (in black) of a male figure. Just recently, while converging upon the same intersection, I noticed new additions to the dark figure: a piece of string tied around his feet, as well as red (and green?) paint splattered on his trunk.
This “suspended” piece of design is in poor taste by reason of the fact that lynching has historically been a misfortune for black people in this country. We are not out of the woods yet.
Thus, as an African-American citizen equally concerned about events as images, I am formally requesting that the dim hanging contour be removed.
