PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAMS : Long, Pagel Fight for No. 2 Job

Coach John Robinson would not comment Friday on the Rams’ backup quarterback battle between Chuck Long and Mike Pagel.

Long has been listed as the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart but saw limited action late in Thursday’s 16-13 loss to the Houston Oilers. He completed four of nine passes for 38 yards, driving the Rams to a fourth-quarter field goal by Tony Zendejas, the team’s only second-half points.

Pagel started the second half, going eight for 11 for 80 yards.

“We both were told before the game,” Long said of Pagel’s second-half start. “We’re sort of taking turns. And that’s a good situation for me anyway. I like being in the game in the fourth quarter with the game on the line.”

Robinson said the team would announce its final cuts, bringing their roster to 47, Monday.

Left tackle Rob Cox said he has changed his name to Rob Jenkins. He would only say that it “was an important family matter.”
