Left-hander Teddy Higuera of the Milwaukee Brewers underwent surgery on his left shoulder in Birmingham, Ala.

The Brewers said that a tear in the cartilage of the shoulder socket was arthroscopically repaired. They said that surgeons were guardedly optimistic that Higuera could be ready for spring training.

Higuera was diagnosed last winter as having a slight tear of the rotator cuff and had undergone a rest and rehabilitation program. His record was 3-2 this season with a 4.46 earned-run average.

Right-hander Dwight Gooden of the New York Mets threw for 10 minutes and said the tightness in his right shoulder that forced from Thursday’s game was gone.

Gooden left Thursday night’s 6-0 Met victory over the Cardinals after five innings, during which he walked five. After the game, he iced his arm for 30 minutes rather than the usual 15.

“I threw 10 minutes. Just easy,” Gooden said. “There was just the regular stiffness. Nothing unusual.”
