Sights Set on Final Four, Tennis
Don Andersen, executive director of the Orange County Sports Assn., has other projects in the works besides the Freedom Bowl and the Disneyland Pigskin Classic.
He has upgraded the Freedom Bowl basketball tournament--held at UC Irvine in December--adding USC and Houston this season.
The new 19,500-seat Anaheim Arena, expected to be completed in 1993, opens a number of doors for the OCSA, including the NCAA basketball tournament and Davis Cup tennis.
“The NCAA told us as soon as the building is finished they’ll consider us for first- and second-round action,” Andersen said. “If we’re close to 20,000 (capacity) we’re in line for the Final Four. We’ve talked to the Davis Cup people and we’d like to bid for the Davis Cup.”
An Orange County stop on the Senior PGA Tour is another future OCSA event. And ground-breaking for a three-story building that will house the Orange County Hall of Fame, another OCSA venture, near Gate 6 at Anaheim Stadium is expected to begin within 60 days.
