South Senior Wins Windsurfing Title
Mariel Devesa, a senior at South Torrance High, won the junior national windsurfing title in the girls’ under-21 age division last weekend and is seeking sponsors to compete in the World Championships Sept. 28-Oct. 5 in Sola, Norway.
It is the second consecutive year Devesa has qualified for the World Championships. Last year, however, she was unable to attend the competition in the Caribbean because she did not raise enough money to make the trip. Devesa said she needs about $4,500 to travel to Norway.
Devesa, 16, who trains at Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro, placed first in a field of about 60 competitors last weekend at the junior nationals at Crissy Field in San Francisco Bay. She also took first in the women’s open division, a non-qualifying category.

NFL official Hendi Ancich, a standout lineman for San Pedro High in 1952-54, will be the guest speaker when the Pirate Booster Club meets Sept. 6 at Yugoslav Hall in San Pedro.
New San Pedro High football Coach Michael Walsh will be introduced, as will members of the Pirate varsity and B teams. Social hour begins at 6:30 p.m., with dinner following at 7:30.
Walsh will have plenty of experience alongside him this season. Two of the team’s assistants--Mel Mothershead and John Misetich--are former San Pedro head coaches.
Tickets are $15. Information: Eddie Main at (213) 547-3184.
Liz Masakayan and Linda Chisholm-Carrillo won in the final of the $75,000 Flamingo Hilton Women’s Pro Beach Volleyball World Championships last weekend with a dramatic 16-14 victory over Jackie Silva and Deb Richardson at the Flamingo Hilton in Las Vegas.
It was the second tournament victory of the season for Chisholm-Carrillo and the first for Masakayan, who split $18,000. They defeated Coors Light U.S. Open champions and third-seeded Gail Castro and Lori Kotas in the final of the winners’ bracket, 15-10.
Top amateur cyclists will compete tonight in the Kenwood Golden State Grand Prix series at the 7-Eleven Olympic Velodrome at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Races begin at 7:30. Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for students with identification. Information: (213) 516-4000.
