Saints Win Behind Hebert’s Late Heroics, 27-24 : Interconference: After two costly third-quarter interceptions, quarterback bounces back with a 10-yard touchdown pass.

For another week, at least, quarterback Bobby Hebert of the New Orleans Saints has silenced those critics who booed him loud and long and shouted for his backup, Steve Walsh.

Hebert revived a sagging offense on a final drive in the fourth quarter, marching his team 68 yards in 14 plays and throwing a 10-yard touchdown pass to Floyd Turner with 1:11 left to beat the Seahawks, 27-24.

“It had to be a perfect pass, and it had to be a perfect catch. If either one hadn’t happened, it would not have worked,” said Turner, who was tightly covered by linebacker Terry Wooden.

Hebert completed five of eight passes for 64 yards on the six-minute drive. The winning pass to Turner came on fourth down.

“If you play well, they’re going to cheer you. If you don’t, they’re going to boo you,” Hebert said. “I guess some fans had their feelings hurt.”

Hebert finished with 18 completions in 29 attempts for 226 yards and two touchdowns. But he was also intercepted twice and sacked four times.

Both interceptions and two of the sacks came in the third quarter as the Seahawks took a 24-20 lead.

The Saints built a 20-7 halftime lead on a 50-yard touchdown pass play from Hebert to running back Gill Fenerty, a 47-yard field goal by Morten Andersen and a 39-yard interception return by Pat Swilling.

After the second quarter, Hebert was unable to generate any offense until the final drive, and the Seahawks rallied with a 17-point third quarter. Reserve cornerback Brian Davis intercepted a pass by Hebert and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown to cap the surge.

After Hebert’s heroics, the Seahawks’ Jeff Kemp, forced in when Dave Krieg broke his right thumb, took Seattle 60 yards to a 37-yard field goal attempt by John Kasay with 14 seconds left, but the kick was wide left.

“I pushed it,” Kasay said. “The snap and the hold were perfect. Everything was right on. I just missed it.”

Coach Chuck Knox said Krieg will miss about six weeks.
