OUTLOOK

The Spartans have seven players returning on defense, but it was a defense that gave up 20.2 points per game last season. Mahoney is hoping that a year’s experience will make it a little stingier. “We had a real good offense last year, but we couldn’t stop anyone,” Mahoney said. Braun is the anchor of the defense, but look for Williams to have an impact. He has put on 30 pounds since last season and will play linebacker and running back. On offense, Williams will share time in the backfield with Tsui and Pearsall, two quick tailbacks. The quarterback position is a question. Strapp gets first crack at the job. “We feel A.J. can do the job, we just have to keep him from getting pounded,” Mahoney said.
