Businesses Get Tax Cut for Bus Money

Share

Ventura County Supervisor John Flynn on Thursday announced the beginning of a new voucher program that will give area businesses a tax break if they partially subsidize the bus tickets of their workers.

The plan, created by the Southern California Assn. of Governments, allows private companies to purchase “transit checks” for employees in exchange for state income tax deductions of up to $21 a month per worker, Flynn said.

The vouchers will be accepted by most municipal bus operators in Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino and Riverside counties.

South Coast Area Transit--which provides bus service in Oxnard, Ventura, Port Hueneme, Ojai and Santa Paula--is among the Ventura County operators that will participate.

“Our air is getting so bad, we’ve got to do something,” said Flynn, who is president of the regional association of governments.
