TUSTIN : City-School Board Panel Meets 1st Time

Share

A joint youth committee formed by the Tustin Unified School District and the City Council held its first meeting this week.

“We established a number of things, and some of our priorities were roughly drawn out,” said Councilwoman Leslie Anne Pontious, who is serving as co-chairwoman with school board member Gloria Tuchman. “The main thing we covered was the county child-care plan and the state and federal funding that will come out of that and where we fit in.”

The committee, which has yet to select a formal name, will meet the first Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. The location is uncertain.

The committee will be seeking funds to improve programs for area youth, Pontious said, particularly at the middle-school level.

“We are looking for providers who could help coordinate programs,” Pontious said. “The elementary schools are either taken care of or are in the process of being dealt with. But the middle schools now have no programs, and we feel there’s a strong need for sixth-, seventh-, (and) eighth-graders to have something to do after school and before school.”

The committee is seeking suggestions from the public. For information, call Tustin City Hall at (714) 544-8890 and ask for community services.
