SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO : Pilot Recycling Program Extended

A South County trash-collection company that has helped pilot a three-city curbside recycling experiment has won a nine-month extension of the program in San Juan Capistrano.

Solag Disposal Inc., which collects trash in Laguna Niguel, Dana Point, Aliso Viejo, San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano, won an extension from October through June 30 by a unanimous vote of the City Council last week. A similar program is being tried in Dana Point and San Clemente.

Solag has helped with a curbside recycling project involving about 1,000 homes over the past six months. The trial program has received “great reviews” and has enjoyed an 80% participation rate, said Douglas Dumhart, a city official.

The cost of the program is about $1 a month per homeowner, according to Dumhart. The city pays Solag about $2,480 a month extra for recycling and then receives about $1,100 in revenue from sales of the recycled material, Dumhart said.

After the contract extension runs out June 30, the city hopes to expand the program citywide under a new contract, Dumhart said.

“At that time the recycling program will either be renewed with Solag or it will go out to bid,” Dumhart said. “It will be up to the City Council to decide that.”
