Bears Hit Target--Testaverde--to Win, 21-20 : NFC: Chicago defensive game plan is to put pressure on Tampa Bay quarterback and it works in victory.

There was nothing fancy about the Bears’ defensive game plan. It called for good old-fashioned pressure on a quarterback who has a habit of wilting in the face of a strong rush.

Chicago sacked Vinny Testaverde six times and got to his backup, Chris Chandler, once Sunday, throwing the Buccaneers’ offense out of kilter and keying a 21-20 victory before 62,409 at Tampa Stadium.

John Roper, Richard Dent and Steve McMichael each had two sacks, and Jim Harbaugh threw two touchdown passes as the Bears (2-0) overcame four turnovers to improve their September record to 21-2 over the past seven years.

“Any quarterback can be rattled,” Dent said. “We knew if we got in Vinny’s face enough early that we’d have the better day. We knew he was the kind of guy that if you put the heat on him, we could put him off his game.”

Testaverde completed 17 of 29 passes for 161 yards.

Chicago sacked him three times in each half and held the Bucs to two field goals after recovering two fumbles in Bear territory.

Harbaugh completed 13 of 20 passes for 153 yards and had touchdown pass plays of seven yards to Neal Anderson and 43 yards to Wendell Davis.

Anderson also scored on a 12-yard run, countered by a 64-yard touchdown run by Tampa Bay’s Gary Anderson that gave the Bucs a 10-7 lead.

That lead was lost for good on Neal Anderson’s touchdown reception from Harbaugh in the second quarter.

The victory was the 15th for Chicago in its past 17 meetings with Tampa Bay (0-2).

Despite the loss, first-year Coach Richard Williamson was encouraged. Last week, he criticized his players for “changing personalities” during a 16-13 loss to the Jets.

“When we walked into the dressing room, a lot of guys could barely walk. That’s the way the game is supposed to be played,” Williamson said. “We played our guts out right down to the end. I saw a completely different team.”
