Bobby Ray Duckworth, a former wide receiver with the San Diego Chargers and Los Angeles Rams, is being sought by police in connection with an alleged rape and beating that reportedly occurred last week at his Carlsbad home.

Duckworth, 32, is suspected of beating and raping a 28-year-old Carlsbad woman whom he had reportedly picked up in a restaurant, police said.

A $100,000 warrant was issued for his arrest Friday morning, and police have been looking for Duckworth since, said Detective Don DeTar of the Carlsbad Police Department.

According to DeTar, attorneys who said they represent Duckworth called investigators Monday to say that Duckworth would turn himself in soon. Duckworth had told police Friday that he would come to the station that afternoon, but he never appeared and has not been seen in Carlsbad since, DeTar said.

Detectives interviewed Duckworth last week after a woman claimed he had raped and beaten her between 10 and 11 p.m. on Labor Day, DeTar said.

The woman said she had met Duckworth earlier that evening at Gerico’s Bar & Grill, 850 Tamarack Ave., in Carlsbad and that “they struck up a conversation, and he offered to rent her his house in Carlsbad for a low price,” DeTar said.

Duckworth reportedly took the woman to the house later that night and allegedly attacked her there, DeTar said. The woman told investigators she and Duckworth had been drinking, DeTar said.

She reportedly went to Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside the next morning, and detectives interviewed Duckworth at the police station that night. At that time, he promised to stay in contact with police, DeTar said.

A warrant for his arrest was issued a few days later. He is wanted on suspicion of one count of assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury and forcible rape. If convicted, he faces a maximum of nine years in prison.
