Attention all Trekkies: A Star Trek Exhibit featuring 25 years of books and memorabilia is beaming down at the Honnold Mudd Library in Claremont through Dec. 31.

There are Capt. Kirk, Mr. Spock the pointy-eared Vulcan, “Bones” McCoy and the rest of the gang who shipped out on the Enterprise so many light years ago.

But this exhibit is literary more than kitschy. It includes some of the more than 100 original novels based on “Star Trek,” novelizations of original episodes and a selection of academic articles that have discussed the Star Trek phenomenon in popular culture, psychology and film journals.

“Since the Star Trek anniversary was coming up we were looking at a way to combine the show with academics,” said Meg Garrett, a reference librarian who

assembled the show.

“This isn’t just popular culture for people who know who the Klingons are,” she said. “The show has generated a great deal of academic interest and analysis over the years.”

Of course, the exhibit also includes Star Trek photos and toys, including a Capt. Kirk doll, a communicator used by Federation forces and a Tribble--one of the small, furry, cuddly, interplanetary creatures immortalized in the episode “The Trouble With Tribbles.”

The private library, the main library for the Claremont Colleges, is open from 8 a.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday; 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to midnight Sunday. For more information, call (714) 621-8150. Admission is free.
