A teacher with the Los Angeles Unified School District is among 216 nationwide to receive the annual Presidential Award for excellence in science and mathematics teaching, the White House has announced.
Sachi Kanenaka teaches science at Windsor Hills Magnet Elementary School in Los Angeles. The only other Southern Californian to win the citation is Vicki Newman of McGaugh Elementary School in the Orange County community of Seal Beach.
The awards program, begun in 1983 by the White House and the National Science Foundation, is designed to recognize excellent teachers and to encourage them to remain in the profession.
