COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UC Irvine Wins 2 in Water Polo Tournament

The UC Irvine water polo team won two of three games against local schools Friday at Corona del Mar High School. On the opening day of its 25th annual tournament, the Anteaters beat USC in overtime, 13-12, and routed Loyola Marymount, 26-1, before falling to UCLA, 8-7.

Tom Lowrey scored with 1 minute 39 seconds left in overtime to give Irvine a 12-11 lead over USC and Kurt Edler scored with 40 seconds left to put the game away.

Marc Hunt scored six goals and Steve Gill and Peter Muller had four each in UCI’s victory over Loyola Marymount.

UCLA built an 8-4 lead after three quarters before UCI made it close by scoring three goals in the final quarter. Pablo Yzizar had three goals for Irvine.

In nonconference women’s soccer:

UC Irvine 2, Northern Colorado 1--The Anteaters scored two goals in the final five minutes to win in Greeley, Colo.

Shawna Berke scored the game-winner with 1:52 left to break a 1-1 tie. She got assists from Melissa Pilgrim and Kelly Standard.

Northern Colorado took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a goal by Kaira Karlen. Irvine (1-2-1) tied the score on a goal by Katie Ralph with about five minutes left in the game.

In the Cal State Fullerton women’s volleyball tournament:

Cal State Fullerton 3, Wright State 1--Becky Howlett had 22 kills, and Stacey Stanek had 45 assists in the Titans’ 13-15, 15-6, 15-7, 15-3 victory. Howlett’s .421 hitting percentage for the match was a season-high, and the Titans also had a season-high 20 blocks. Fullerton had been swept by Oregon State, 15-3, 15-13, 15-6 earlier Friday.
