Four inmates were injured, one seriously, in a riot Saturday at the County Jail facility in Descanso, authorities said.

An inmate initiated the brawl shortly after 10:30 a.m., when he allegedly stole another inmate’s property, said Sgt. Glenn Revell, spokesman for the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.

Revell said the disturbance widened as more than 25 other inmates, armed with rocks and makeshift weapons, fought each other for about 10 minutes before deputies were able to restore order.

One inmate suffered a depressed skull fracture and was taken to Valley Medical Center. From there, he was flown by Life Flight helicopter to UC San Diego Medical Center, where spokesman Tom Banaszak said he underwent surgery and was listed in fair condition Saturday night.

The inmate’s name had not been released late Saturday, pending notification of next of kin, Revell said.

One inmate sustained a broken jaw, and two incurred minor cuts that required stitches.

Revell said no sheriff’s deputies were injured.
