Bob May Loses British Amateur Title to Wolstenholme
Gary Wolstenholme, playing on the same course on which his father won the English amateur golf title three decades ago, won the British Amateur Championship with an 8 and 6 victory over American Bob May on Sunday.
Wolstenholme was only 1-up after 17 holes of the 36-hole match play final, then took control.
May, 22, of La Habra, who plans to turn pro, appeared drained after two weeks of European golf. He played for the U.S. team in the Walker Cup last weekend in Ireland.
Wolstenholme won on the Ganton Golf Course on which his late father, Guy, won the English stroke play title in 1960. The younger Wolstenholme was born that year.
“I’m proud of comparisons with my father because he was a great player, but it’s lovely to put my name on a trophy where his doesn’t appear,” said Wolstenholme, whose father never got farther than the semifinals of the British Amateur tournament.
