An off-duty sheriff’s deputy who witnessed six men attacking another man intervened in the fight and wounded one suspect who had been armed with a knife, authorities said Monday.
The deputy, whose name was not immediately released, was driving on Whittier Boulevard at Redman Avenue near Whittier about 8:05 p.m. Sunday, Sheriff’s Deputy Gabe Ramirez said.
After witnessing the attack, the deputy felt compelled to take some action and stopped and got out of his car, Ramirez said. After identifying himself, the off-duty deputy was struck in the forehead with a bottle by one of the suspects, who had been seen earlier with a knife. The suspect then charged the deputy, who fired one round, striking him in the left thigh, Ramirez said. Both the wounded suspect and the off-duty deputy were taken to a hospital.
