Cool Summer to Depart With a Warm Farewell

Summer will make its official exit this weekend, and forecasters expect warmer temperatures and sunnier skies to mark its departure. By Sunday, however, fall weather will arrive with cooler temperatures.

“It’s beginning to feel like summer, when summer is coming to an end,” said Wilbur Shigehara, forecaster for the National Weather Service in San Diego.

A moist low-pressure system from Mexico will bring warmer temperatures and increased humidity through Saturday, Shigehara said. The pressure system will bring highs into the upper 70s and low 80s downtown. Temperatures should exceed the normal high for this time of year, which is 77 degrees.

Beach-goers can expect plenty of sunshine and temperatures in the 70s today and Saturday. Forecasters said the low pressure system from the south will dissipate the morning and evening low clouds sooner, leaving more sunshine at the beaches. Water temperature at the beaches should be near 67 degrees. Surfers can expect the usual 2- to 3-foot waves.

The moisture accompanying the low pressure system will create thunderclouds in the mountains, with a chance of showers there, forecasters said.

“Precipitation in the mountains should not be a problem, but Friday and Saturday campers should watch out for rain,” Shigehara said. He also noted that there is a slight chance of thundershowers drifting inland in the afternoon and evenings, perhaps causing showers in the foothills.

Although fall officially begins at 5:38 a.m. Monday, changes may be noticed as early as Sunday, forecasters said. A low-pressure system from the west will bring fall-like conditions to San Diego. This system will bring cooler air that will diminish the thunderstorm activity in the mountains, Shigehara said. This low-pressure system will cause an increase in morning and evening low clouds. It may even bring some “mist or drizzle” in the morning, Shigehara said.

Friday and Saturday the coastal highs, including downtown, are expected to be 74 to 84 degrees with lows from 62 to 68 degrees. The inland areas can expect highs of 84 to 94 degrees with lows of 58 to 65 degrees through Saturday.

The mountains should expect humid weather and partly cloudy skies, with highs from 75 to 85 degrees and lows of 47 to 57 degrees. The deserts can expect highs of 97 to 105 degrees with lows from 68 to 78 degrees through Saturday.
