Wellman Activated by Oilers

Gary Wellman, a former Westlake High and USC wide receiver, was activated by the Houston Oilers on Friday and could make his NFL debut Sunday against the New England Patriots.

Wellman was one of Houston’s final cuts before the start of the regular season and was signed to a berth on the team’s practice roster shortly afterward.

Wellman was the team’s fifth-round draft choice and the 129th overall selection this spring.

He made 66 catches for 1,015 yards and five touchdowns last year, team highs in each category.

Bittner said he resigned to devote more time to his pursuit of a master’s degree in business administration. He also cited financial reasons.

“I felt it was time to make the move to get my MBA and continue working toward my career goals,” Bittner said in a press release.
