Chris Chandler will replace Vinny Testaverde as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ quarterback for Sunday’s game at Detroit. Testaverde suffered a sprained toe during a 17-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills and Coach Richard Williamson said Chandler earned the start with a strong second-half performance.

Tampa Bay (0-4) is 16-30 in games Testaverde has started in the last four seasons. The team is 0-6 when he hasn’t started.

The San Francisco 49ers’ Joe Montana, who hasn’t thrown a football since Aug. 13 because of the torn right elbow tendon, underwent tests and Coach George Seifert said the quarterback might have to wait until next Monday to start throwing.

Once he starts throwing, Montana probably will be about two weeks away from returning to the lineup. Steve Young, who has started in Montana’s absence, is the top-rated quarterback in the NFL.

Bill Belichick, coach of the Cleveland Browns, declined to explain why receiver Reggie Langhorne was not with the team for Sunday’s game against the New York Giants.

Langhorne refused to practice Thursday and asked Belichick to trade him because he is not playing enough. A starter since 1986, Langhorne lost his starting job this season after holding out during training camp.
