U.S. Players Involved in Auto Accident
Limousines carrying some members of the U.S. Ryder Cup team to a formal dinner Wednesday night were involved in an accident, with Steve Pate taken to a hospital for examination, PGA officials said.
According to the officials, a caravan of cars was bringing the American team on the 25-mile trip from Kiawah Island, the site of the biennial competition between teams representing the United States and Europe, to Charleston.
About five miles south of Charleston, the officials said an unlit police vehicle moved into the caravan in front of a lit police escort vehicle. The escort vehicle braked, setting off a three-car accident.
There was no immediate word on the condition of Pate, one of the 10 players on the U.S. team.
The rest of the players were delayed, but did arrive at the dinner.
