TENNIS ROUNDUP : Connors to Play McEnroe in Swiss Semifinals

Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe will meet for the 32nd time today after they advanced to the semifinals of the Swiss Indoor tournament Friday at Basel.

Connors defeated Israel’s Amos Mansdorf, 6-3, 6-2, and McEnroe beat Sweden’s Christian Bergstrom, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3.

McEnroe has an 18-13 edge over Connors in previous matches.

Seventh-seeded Soviet player Alexander Volkov upset second-seeded Karel Novacek of Czechoslovakia, 6-1, 6-7 (11-9), 6-3. Volkov next plays Switzerland’s Jakob Hlasek.

Unseeded Australian Jason Stoltenberg beat defending champion Brad Gilbert, 6-3, 6-1, in the quarterfinals of the Queensland Open at Brisbane, Australia.

Third-seeded Aaron Krickstein also advanced, cruising past fifth-seeded Wayne Ferreira, 6-4, 6-3.

Top-seeded Manuela Maleeva-Fragniere beat Julie Halard, 6-3, 6-4, in the quarterfinals of the Bayonne Open in France.

Maleevea-Fragniere next faces Rachel McQuillan, who beat Radka Zrubakova, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.

Top-seeded Emilio Sanchez advanced to the semifinals of the Palermo ATP tournament in Sicily by defeating eighth-seeded Thomas Muster, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).
