Two Prep Standouts Make College Commitments : Basketball: Mater Dei’s Reggie Geary chooses Arizona; Kennedy’s Jermaine Galloway picks DePaul.

Mater Dei’s Reggie Geary and Kennedy’s Jermaine Galloway have made oral commitments to play basketball in college.

Geary committed to Arizona on Tuesday. Galloway said he will announce today that he will sign with DePaul.

Geary, a 6-foot-2 guard, visited Arizona this past weekend and said he made his decision Monday. He also visited Villanova and had planned trips to UCLA and Vanderbilt.

Galloway, a 6-9 center, visited DePaul two weeks ago. He also visited Cincinnati and had planned trips to Oregon State, Creighton and Colorado State.

Both will sign letters of intent Nov. 14, the first day of the early signing period.

“It was the toughest decision I ever had to make, but, in the end, Arizona felt right,” Geary said. “I liked the school and the program. I also think there’s a chance to play some next year.”

Geary said he plans to major in business administration.

Last season, Geary averaged 13.4 points for the Monarchs, who reached the semifinals of the Southern Section I-A playoffs. He was named second-team All-Orange County last season.

Geary said part of the reason he selected Arizona was the team’s style. The Wildcats play up-tempo basketball, which fits Geary’s talents. He is strong in the open court, but his outside shooting is suspect.

“That’s what I plan to work on this year,” Geary said. “I want to increase my range to 20 feet, at least.”

Galloway averaged 24 points and 11 rebounds in leading Kennedy to its second consecutive Garden Grove League championship last season. He was selected first-team All--Orange County.

He said he plans to major in criminal justice. Like Geary, Galloway said he picked DePaul partly because he could get some playing time as a freshman.

“I think there’s a good chance I’ll get to play,” Galloway said. “I really enjoyed the coach and the people there at DePaul. I just felt comfortable there.”
