Amateur Boxing Card to Be Held Tonight at Pasadena Elks Lodge

Amateur boxing returns tonight to the Pasadena Elks Lodge with the Crown City Stables’ “The Night of the Rising Stars.”

Appearances by boxing legend Canto Robledo and potential Olympian Shane Mosley will be among the highlights when the card begins at 7 p.m.

Robledo, the only blind boxing manager and promoter in the United States, will be working the corner of lightweight Raul Gonzalez, one of Crown City’s top boxers.

Mosley, a Pomona resident and silver medalist at the 1991 Olympic Festival, will be honored. Promoters Joe Robledo, Canto’s son, and Joey Olivera, a former State California lightweight champion, will make the presentation.

The semi-retired Canto Robledo was blinded while fighting as a ranked amateur. Although he has remained active in boxing, Robledo, 79, will be working his first fight in three years.

Gonzalez, a 135-pounder from Pasadena, will be one of eight fighters representing Crown City.

Amateur fighters representing clubs from throughout the San Gabriel Valley and Los Angeles will be paired off. Weigh-in is between 5 and 6 p.m.

In addition to Gonzalez, Troy Lassiter, a 165-pound middleweight, Kingsley Brock, a 180-pound light heavyweight, and Francisco Flores, a 147-pound welterweight, will be among top fighters representing Crown City.

Richard Plascencia and Greg Levy, two 135-pound lightweights, will be making their amateur debuts for Crown City.

Admission is $8 for adults, $4 for students with identification and $4 for children under 12.
