A California Highway Patrol officer shot a San Diego man during a car theft investigation Thursday afternoon in Normal Heights, authorities said.
The wounded man, Ian James Myles, 34, was struck by a single bullet that passed through his upper left forearm, said Debbie Seitz, a Mercy Hospital spokeswoman. Myles was listed in fair condition Thursday night.
After receiving a tip, four San Diego police detectives and a CHP officer waited near a stolen car in the 3600 block of Oregon Street. Myles appeared at 4:20 p.m. and entered the car, CHP spokesman John Marinez said.
Officer Robert Petrachek, a 5-year veteran of the CHP, ordered Myles to surrender, Marinez said. Myles then accelerated the car toward Petrachek, who fired four shots at him, Marinez said.
There were no other injuries.
