Britain’s Steve Cram won a race billed as “the million-dollar mile” at Jakarta, Indonesia, but failed to become an instant millionaire because he did not break his world record.

Cram overtook Olympic 1,500-meter champion Peter Rono of Kenya and won in 3 minutes 52.11 seconds, well off his six-year-old record of 3:46.32. Rono was next in 3:52.64, with Simon Doyle of Australia third in 3:58.49.

World 1,500-meter record-holder Said Aouita of Morocco finished eighth in 4:04.91.
