SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

It would be easy to talk about all the offense El Segundo High rolled up in its 45-0 non-league victory over Mary Star Thursday night at Daniels Field.

But that would give short shrift to the Eagle defense. In truth, both facets of the game worked flawlessly.

El Segundo (2-2) manufactured 228 yards in total offense while holding Mary Star (1-3) to 111 and forcing six turnovers, three of which were returned for long touchdowns.

Cornerback Toby Hale ran back one interception a school-record 104 yards, and Jim Hurley returned another for a 73-yard touchdown. Defensive lineman Frank Taormina also recovered a fumble and returned it 41 yards for a score.

“I’ve never seen three turnovers returned for touchdowns like that,” said Eagle Coach Steve Newell. “That was incredible.”

Reserve halfback David Scanlan led El Segundo with 60 yards, Chris Feeny contributed 31 and quarterback Landon Wilson completed six of 10 passes for 84 yards and two touchdowns.

The Eagles scored on their first possession. After forcing Mary Star to punt, Wilson connected with Nick Coulter for a 48-yard gain on the first play from scrimmage. Feeny then carried it in from one-yard out and Scanlan’s kick gave El Segundo a 7-0 advantage.

The Eagles scored again in the first quarter on an eight-play, 40-yard drive capped off by Wilson’s seven-yard scoring pass to Feeny.

Scanlan added a 27-yard field goal and Wilson hooked up with Coulter on a 13-yard touchdown pass for a 24-0 El Segundo lead.

The Eagles’ domination was apparent by intermission as they out-gained Mary Star, 166-45, while holding the hosts to just three first downs.

Mary Star moved the ball fairly well in the second half, but was victimized by its own miscues.
