Whiteland Janice Wins Futurity
Filly Whiteland Janice won the 99th Kentucky Futurity in a race-off Friday when Somatic broke stride in the homestretch in the final jewel of trotting’s Triple Crown.
Whiteland Janice, driven by Mike Lachance, was two lengths behind when Somatic broke about 70 yards from the wire. The winning time was 2:00 4/5 as she became the 35th filly to take the Futurity before a stunned crowd of 3,819.
Whiteland Janice won the first heat against 12 colts, coming off the pace on the outside to beat Somatic by two lengths in 1:55 2/5. Favored Giant Victory, the Hambletonian champion, was third.
In the second heat, Tommy Haughton drove Somatic to the lead at the eighth pole and held on to defeat Giant Victory by a neck in 1:54 3/5. Whiteland Janice was a head behind in third.
